Queen Maria II da Gloria of Portugal holding a scroll inscribed with the Portuguese Constitution, wearing a jewelled tiara and earrings, a pearl necklace, a gold-embroidered white dress with short puff-sleeves, decorated with the composite breast-star and the sash of the three Portuguese Orders of the Christ, Saint-James and Avis, the Royal crown to her left -- 63 mm diam., gilt-metal mount.

Lot Essay

Mary II da Gloria (1819-1853), Queen of Portugal 1834-1853, was the granddaughter of King John VI (see preceding lot). In 1835, she married Augustus Charles of Beauharnais who died immediately and, in 1836, Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha with whom she had seven children.
