SPANISH SCHOOL, circa 1785

King Charles III of Spain dressed as a hunter and standing with his gun in a landscape, a reclining dog at his feet, the King decorated with the jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and three sashes of orders including the Royal Spanish Order of Charles III -- 58 mm diam., gilt-metal mount.

Lot Essay

An ancient inscription on the backing paper of the miniature indicates: "Le Roi d'Espagne chassant au tir dans le Parc de Saint- Idelphonse.".
Charles III (1716-1788), son of King Philip V and Elisabeth Farnese (see lot 359), became Duke of Parma in 1731, King of the Two-Sicilies in 1755, and King of Spain in 1754. Among the six surviving children from his marriage to Maria-Amalia of Saxony were King Charles IV of Spain (see lot 371) and King Ferdinand IV of the Two-Sicilies (see lot 344).
