The reverse of the miniature is inscribed by Cécile Villeneuve's hand: "Jeanne Paule de St Aulaire Marquise d'Harcourt Paris 1865".

Jeanne Paule Beaupoil de Saint-Aulaire (2 September 1817 - 17 December 1893) was married on 5 August 1841 to George Douglas Trevor Bernard d'Harcourt (1808-1883), Pair de France in 1842 and successively French ambassador in Vienna and London. They had seven children. The Marquise was a talented writer, and among her best-known works was a Vie de Jeanne d'Arc (1846).
