Lot Essay

The dial is conceived as an altar of love with a festooned urn as a finial and a hollow-sided pedestal that is embellished with a medallion of the lyre-bearing Erato, muse of lyric poetry.
This model of case is used on two clocks that were retailed by Thomas Weeks and which have his inscription. One was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 10 April 1986, lot 18 and the other, Dreweatt Neate, Newbury, 8 July 1992, lot 194
