THESE CANDLESTICKS WERE ORIGINALLY CONSIDERED EN SUITE WITH A PAIR OF CANDLE SNUFFERS AND STAND, AND RECORDED AS SUCH BELOW THE PRESENT CANDLESTICKS IN WARRINGTON'S MANUSCRIPT INVENTORY. HOWEVER THEY WERE MADE BY JAMES SCHRUDER, LONDON, 1745 AND WERE SOLD IN THESE ROOMS, 13 MAY 1992, LOT 235, FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE LATE SAMUEL MESSER ESQ.
THE SOCKETS OF THESE CANDELSTICKS ARE COMPOSED OF LAUREL WREATHED 'KRATER' VASES SUPPORTED BY HERMED PEDESTALS WHICH DISPLAY MEDALLIONS OF ANCIENT WORTHIES ABOVE RIBBON-TIED PANELS; WHILE THEIR CUT CORNERS ARE FESTOONED WITH FLOWERED PATTERAE IN SCALLOPED AND IMBRICATED ESCUTCHEONS. ALTHOUGH ELEMENTS OF THEIR DESIGN REFLECT THE GEORGE II 'ANTIQUE' STYLE PROMOTED BY JAMES GIBBS' BOOK OF ARCHITECTURE, 1728, THEIR FORM LARGELY DERIVES FROM A LOUIS XIV PATTERN ISSUED BY DANIEL MAROT (D.1752), ARCHITECT TO WILLIAM III, IN HIS NOUVEAU LIVRE D'ORFEVERIE, 1703, PL. 3.
