AN IMPORTANT LOUIS XV JEWELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX
by Jean Ducrollay, Paris, 1756/1757, with the charge of Julien Berthe and the discharge of Éloi Brichard

Rectangular gold box, the cover, sides and base chased and engraved with scènes champêtres of playing fisher children and fabrics on a matted ground, framed by reeded scrolls, the raised rocaille thumbpiece applied with diamonds -- 80 mm wide.

Lot Essay

The design of the pastoral scenes is probably due to Pasquier-Rémi Mondon who was chef d'atelier to Jean Ducrollay (see Charles Truman, The Gilbert Collection of Gold Boxes, Los Angeles, 1991, pp. 11-14).
Mondon's designs are usually based on engravings after Boucher and his contemporaries, which were adapted, assembled and combined with complimentary backgrounds, as in the present case where the right part of the decoration on the lid is inspired by Le Prince's print of 1742 after Boucher's Le pésche. The scene on the bottom is very similar to the one on another gem-set snuff-box by Ducrollay sold in our London rooms on 14 October 1992, lot 127.
