Circular bonbonnière, the independent lid set with an oval gilt-metal-mounted micro-mosaic depicting a front view of the Theatre of Saint-Charles at Naples with inscription "TEATRO S. CARLO", the base inset with another oval micro-mosaic representing the ground plan of the Royal Palace of Naples inscibed "PAL. NAP.", also in a plain gilt-metal mount -- 83 mm diam.., the base with hairline crack.

Lot Essay

Jean-Louis Leferre (fl. 1781-1838) directed a firm which was renowned for the fabrication of gold-lined tortoiseshell snuff-boxes as the present one. The Louvre owns eight boxes by him which are illustrated in Serge Grandjean, Les tabatières du musée du Louvre, Paris, 1981, nrs 316-323.
