The comte de Caylus began his career in the army, and was sent to Constantinople in 1716. On his return to Paris he met the conoisseur Mariette and the painter Watteau at the salon of the financier Crozat. He engraved for Crozat numerous plates of the receuil Crozat published in 1729 reproducing drawings by old masters. It was while working for Crozat that he met the painter Charles-Antoine Coypel, who was the first recorded owner of the series. The drawings, now attributed to Rembrandt most gifted pupil Gebrand Van Eeckhout, are in the Louvre. Cohen-de Ricci 210; Sander 300
