Paris, 1819-1838

Lot Essay

The scene depicted on the micro-mosaic is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses (1:668-721) and relates how Mercury outdoes the shepherd Argus, charged by Juno to guard Jupiter's mistress Io turned into a heifer. After lulling him with music (Mercury is depicted playing the pipe and wearing his winged hat), the messenger of the gods kills Argus.
