Grand Duchess Helena Pavlovna, her centre-parted brown hair tied in bunches of ringlets, wearing a low-cut white muslin dress tied at her waist with a knotted ribbon, with embroidered frill-bordered décolleté; oval -- 56 mm high, plain gilt-metal mount.

Lot Essay

Helena Pavlovna (1784-1803), 4th child of Tsar Paul I and his wife Maria Feodorovna, was married to the Hereditary Grand Duke Frederick-Lewis of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (see lot 128) in 1799. Another nearly identical version, also posthumous but misidentified as the sitter's sister Catherina Pavlovna, was sold in these rooms, 16 November 1993, lot 101.
