Lot Essay

The identity of the sitter has been suggested as Maria-Anna of Savoy (1757-1824), daughter of King Vittorio Amadeo III of Sardinia (see lots 152 and 163), who was married in 1775 to her half-uncle, Benedetto Maurizio, Duke of Chablais. Maria-Anna was a sister of the Countesses of Provence and Artois (see lot 169), and of the three Sardinian Kings Carlo Emanuele IV, Vittorio Emanuele I (see lot 236) and Carlo Felice.
