Queen Maria-Carolina of Naples with powdered curly hair, wearing a night-blue silk dress bordered with embroidered lace frill, tied with a broad russet sash, a white muslin fichu knotted at her corsage, a red aigrette tucked in her blue silk cap embellished with a long white bandeau, wearing pearl-drop earrings and a quadruple pearl necklace; oval -- 62 mm high, gilt-metal frame with faceted border.

Archduchess Maria-Carolina of Habsburg (1752-1814), daughter of Empress Maria-Theresia (see lot 151) and Emperor Franz-Stephan, was married to Ferdinand IV, King of Naples (see lot 167), in 1768. Only nine of their numerous children survived beyond early childhood. A sister of Queen Marie-Antoinette of France, she was the grandmother of the Duchess of Berry.
