In Genesis (19:30-38) it is related how after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham's nephew Lot took refuge in a cave with his two daughters. Believing that no one but they remained alive on earth to perpetuate the human race, Lot's daughters first made their father drunk and then lay with him in turn. The present miniature is inspired by the large scale oil painting by François de Troy of 1727, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Orléans (inv. nr 832).
