Lot Essay
This is after Jean-Baptiste Augustin's miniature, formerly in the Ernst Holzscheiter Collection, Meilen.
Charles-Ferdinand de Bourbon, duc de Berry, was born in 1778, the second son of the comte d'Artois (see lot 265) and his wife, Marie-Thérèse de Savoie (see lot 169). He emigrated with his parents in 1789 and fought the Revolutionary troops. In 1801, he settled down in England and married Amy Brown with whom he had two daughters. As his family did not recognize this union, they forced him to marry Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles (see lots 257 and 272), in 1816. After the birth of a daughter in 1819, the duc de Berry was murdered in 1820 and did not live to see the birth of his son, the future duc de Bordeaux (see lot 256).
