Lot Essay

Duchesne de Gisors (1770-1856) was the Duchess of Berry's favourite miniaturist. He painted the Duke of Berry in enamel (Bordeaux, musée des Arts Décoratifs), their daughter, Mademoiselle d'Artois (one version in Bordeaux, musée des Arts Décoratifs, and another version formerly in the D. David-Weill Collection), and their son, the young Duke of Bordeaux (one version in Buenos Aires, Museum of Applied Arts, and another version sold in these rooms, 16 November 1993, lot 139). A reduced copy after the present miniature by J.-J. Soutter (signed and dated 1828, enamel, in the musée de l'Horlogerie et de l'Émaillerie, Geneva, inv. nr E 268) indicates on the counter-enamel that the original miniature by Duchesne was painted "d'après nature".
For another portrait of the same sitter, see lot 257.
