LA FONTAINE, Jean de. Fables Choisies Mises en Vers. Paris: chez l'Auteur, 1765-75.
6 volumes, 8° (190 x 120mm). Engraved titles, section title to volume I (on verso of title), frontispiece, 243 plates, head-and tail-pieces throughout inlcuding 3 full-page, by Fessard after Monnet, Loutherbourg, St. Quentin and others, engraved text throughout by Montulay and Drouet. Contemporary red morocco gilt, covers with triple fillet border, spines in six compartments with floral tools, olive morocco lettering-pieces in two, g.e.
A luxurious copy of the first issue of this handsome edition, published by the author on a subscription basis. Rochambeau records two issues: one on papier de Hollande, first advertised at 48 livres for the first four volumes, and one on papier de France, advertised at 36 livres for the four volumes. Once the subscription had closed, the number of volumes was extended to six, and the prices increased to 60 and 48 livres respectively. As this still failed to cover the cost of production, the publishers also had to advertise the work. Rochambeau 101; Cohen-de Ricci 551-2; Ray French 61 ("the ensemble is as harmonious as it is elegant"); Sander 1068. (6)
