FIRST EDITION. Pierre-Jean Mariette was a publisher from the famous family of engravers and publishers, but he was also known as a collector and amateur. His collection of old master drawings was at the time one of the most celebrated in Europe, and despite the efforts of the Royal librarian Bignon to have it bought en-bloc by the King, at Mariette's death it was sold at auction.
Mariette had a great admiration for the sculptor Edmé Bouchardon and considered him to be one of the best draughtsman in Europe, and naturally it was to him he turned to when he planned the Traité des Pierres Gravées. The engraver of the drawings, the amateur Comte de Caylus, was a friend of Mariette and one of the most influencial art critic of the time.
The attestation in front of the volume I explains how the two volumes passed in 1774 from the library of the king to that of the Marquis de Gléon. The Marquis de Gléon had given the king four 10th century documents concerning the donation of lands, and in recognition for this gift the king asked his librarian Jérôme Frédérique Bignon to give the Marquis de Gléon these two volumes.
