Provenance: Napoleon (as First Consul; binding, inscription); Lt.Gen. Sir Robert Wilson (1777-1849); Helen Corke (presentation inscription from Evelyn Allardyce).
A fine binding, with an evocative provenance: in 1798 Napoleon ordered 9 gold medals to be struck in commemoration of an action at Villiers-en-Couché on 24th April 1794. During this action British troops' led by 8 officers routed a superior French force and ensured the safety of Emperor Francis II: Napoleon was so impressed with the bravery of the officers that each was sent a medal (the ninth remained in the imperial cabinet). Wilson was one of the 8 officers.
