OVIDIUS NASO, Publius. Les Métamorphoses. With text in Latin and translation into French by G.T. Villenave. Paris: Didot l'Aîné for Gay and Guestard, 1806-7[-21]. 4 volumes. 8° (234 x 151mm). Frontispiece and 143 plates mostly after Monsiau, Le Barbier, and Moreau, and also after Courbe and Duvivier in vol. IV, engraved by Hulk, Baquoy, Courbe, and others. Uncut. (Very occasional, light foxing.) Contemporary red morocco, gilt spine (very slightly scuffed).
This edition, in a new translation, printed by Didot, and illustrated by Monsiau, Le Barbier, and Moreau, was clearly intended to attract attention. There seems to have been some difficulty in completing it, however, since some of the plates in volume IV are dated 1820 and 1821, and some are the work of other artists. In spite of any difficulties in production, this edition offers "a comprehensive sampling of the work done by these masters in their later years" (Ray). Cohen-de Ricci 773-74; Ray French, 96.
François-Marie Arouet VOLTAIRE. La Pucelle d'Orleans. Paris: Crapelet, [1799]. 2 volumes. 8° (225 x 141mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece by Gaucher, 21 plates after Monsiau, Le Barbier, Monnet, and Marillier, engraved by Baquoy, Choffard, Delignon and others. (Light foxing.) Contemporary dark blue straight-grained morocco gilt, elaborately gilt spine, g.e. by Bozerian jeune, stamped at foot of spine. Provenance: Yves Refoulé, bookplate. Cohen-de Ricci 1035. (6)
