ROUSSEAU, Jean-Jacques. Oeuvres completes: Lettres Élémentaires sur La Botanique and Recueil de Plantes Coloriées. Paris: Poinçot, 1789.
3 volumes. 8° (197 x 123mm). Letterpress half-titles and engraved pictorial titles after Marillier to vols. I and II, vol.III contains 44 (numbered 1-38, 1-6) hand-coloured plates. (Light foxing to flyleaves only.) Contemporary green straight-grained morocco gilt (few small dark spots on covers), arms of Duchesse de Berry (Olivier 2554) blocked in gilt on covers, pink silk endpapers, g.e., by Bradel. Provenance: Marie-Caroline-Ferdinande-Louise de Bourbon-Sicile, Duchesse de Berry (1798-1870), binding and Bibliothèque de Rosny bookplate.
These volumes, constituting vols. 5, 6 and 38 of Poinçot's edition of the Oeuvres, formed part of the celebrated library of the Duchesse de Berry at Rosny. Her ownership of them is particularly interesting in light of her patronage of Pierre-Joseph Redouté, who illustrated an edition of Rousseau's Lettres élémentaires sur la botanique in 1822. Cohen-de Ricci 910-11. (3)
