TASSO, Torquato. La Gerusalemme Liberata. Paris: F. A. Quillau for Augustin Delalain, Pierre Durand and Jean-Claud Molini, 1771.
2 volumes, large 8° (226 x 140mm). Engraved title and frontispiece to each volume, dedication, 20 plates, 9 full-page engraved vignettes, engraved head- and tail-pieces throughout including 9 full-page vignettes, by Baquoy, Mesnil, Patas and others after Gravelot. (Final quire of vol. II with slight stain to lower margin, one or two plates very lightly offset onto text, occasional unobtrusive staining.) CONTEMPORARY RED MOROCCO 'RELIURE DE PRÉSENT', PROBABLY BY DEROME LE JEUNE, designed by Gravelot, covers with triple fillet borders, spines lettered in gilt within oval panels surmounted by a winged torch and suspending floral and drapery swags over ?republican trophies, a rosette within cartouche surmounted by laurel sprays at foot of spine, g.e. (skilful repairs to head and foot of spines). Provenance: T. Hugh Cobb (bookplate).
A fine contempory de présent binding, almost certainly by Derome le Jeune. Ray (Appendix I) shows an almost identical binding with Derome's ticket: it differs only in the four tiny roundels at the corners of the spine, and in the cartouche at the foot of the spine, here filled with a rosette, but in Ray's copy containing the date. The copy shown by De Ricci (Schiff Collection I, 35), like our copy, shows a rosette instead of the date. The binding was designed by Gravelot, who was responsible for all the illustrations in this "handsome and delightful book" (Ray). The present copy is on papier de Hollande. Cohen-de Ricci 974-5 ("très belle édition"); Ray French 22A and Appendix I. (2)
