FIRST EDITION. Watelet inherited a fortune from his father, who was in charge of gathering taxes in Orléans. As a young man he worked for several years with his father, but left to become an artist and amateur. On his inheritance he was able to open a salon, and through his friends Cochin and Pierre became very influencial. Watelet was elected to the French Academy the same year of the publication of L'art de peindre. Cohen-de Ricci 1051
