Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece in each volume, the first signed by Choubard after David and printed in sepia, both heightened in gilt, engraved portrait of La Fontaine by Choubard on chine appliqué, 23 wood-engraved plates only with tissue guards, wood-engraved vignettes, all after Jules David. (Lacking the final plate in volume I, very occasional spotting.) Contemporary red morocco, sides and flat-backed spines with gilt-stamped designs after the artist and further decoration in blind, gilt turn-ins, white satin doublures, g.e (upper joints of volume I slightly cracked). Later morocco-backed chemise to each volume and common slipcase. Provenance: Ex libris JLR (book label). on papier jésus vélin satiné. Oblong 4° (225 x 280mm). 20 hand-coloured lithographed plates after Vernet heightened with gum arabic, each with facing page of engraved or lithographed text. (Short tear to lower margin of final plate, several leaves of text shaved with slight loss at outer margin, no title page). Later straight-grained brown morocco over marbled boards, flat-backed gilt spine, t.e.g. Original yellow front wrapper with printed title and decorative border bound in (slightly creased). (3)
