ALS FROM ZOLA to an unnamed correspondant; 2 plates by H.Toussaint after N.Goeneutte (each present in two states, all initialled in pencil 'N.G.')and 10 ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS ON PAPIER VÉLIN BY H.P.DILLON; albumen print portrait of the author loosely inserted. Red morocco gilt, g.e., original wrappers bound-in, by Chambolle-Duru.
AN INTERESTING EXTRA ILLUSTRATED COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Number 41 of 75 copies on papier Hollande. The plates are initialled by Norbert Goeneutte (1849-1911) and the watercolours are by Henri Patrice Dillon (1851-1909). The letter dated Médan 16 October 1878, gives permission for the use of 'L'Assomoir' as the name for a newspaper, but regrets that he is unable to become a contributor, but reccommending Paul Alexis as an Alternative.
