(11 1/2 x 8 1/8in.), contemporary red-stained sheepskin over wooden boards, possibly an Augsburg binding with a large blind-stamped lattice and small stamps, leather index tabs, lacks metal furniture, broken, covers detached, lower cover in three pieces, 1/1 torn at inner margin and with small repair at top, 2/4 with repaired tear, stained, woodcut border on 1/2 slightly cropped at top.
Collation: [1-5 6 ]. 61 leaves without signatures or foliation. Type 2:118. 34 lines. Woodcut Maiblumen initial S joined with a woodcut ornamental half-border on 1/2, spaces for initials elsewhere. Initials and capital strokes in red, shields in border on 1/2 with added color.
Third edition of the first book on eugenics. Albrecht von Eyb (1420-1475) was a doctor of law and archdeacon of Würzburg. The book contains chapters on generation, fertility, selection of a physician, household matters and one of the earliest tracts on the education of children. In answer to the question posed by the book's title, whether a man should marry or not, the author is in favor of the institution. In some copies the woodcut initial and border on 1/2 are not found.
