Chancery 4to, 207 x 149mm. (8 3/16 x 5 7/8in.), contemporary blind-stamped calf over bevelled wooden boards, covers tooled to a panel design with rosettes, floral tools, a curved leaf tool, and a heart transfixed by an arrow within a lozenge, brass catch with cast floral design (lacking clasp), formerly chained: shank of staple at upper edge of lower cover, spine in three compartments, remains of nineteenth-century paper label, edges plain; covers rubbed with leather loss to corners and to a small patch on upper cover, spine almost completely worn away, old marginal repairs to fols. 1/2 and 1/4, gutter of 1/4 repaired, rubricated opening initial and inscription at top of 1/2 faded (bleached), fol. 5/8 with small tear caused by erasure of old stain in margin of woodcut (figure 32), affecting two
letters on verso, similar small hole to fol. 6/4 (figure 36) affecting caption and one letter, horizontal crease to conjugate leaf 18/4.5, worming to lower margins of last quire, a few minor marginal tears, light offsetting of printer's ink from stacking of sheets in quire 4, slight offsetting of coloring, a few small marginal stains, some dust-soiling to fore-margins.
Collation: [1 2-21 22 ]. 173 leaves (of 174, lacking fol. 20/8 blank), without signatures or foliation. Contents: 1/1r: title, v. blank, 1/2 r-v: Preface, 1/3-1/4r: table for part 1, 1/4v blank, 2/1r-20/6v: Text, part 1, 20/7r-v: table for parts 2-7, 21/1r-22/10v: Text, parts 2-7. Types: 2:150 (title, headings and chapter numeration); 1:92 (text). 34 lines. 150 half-page woodcuts of plants (figure 96, Nasturtium, printed upside down), COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Space for six-line initial on 1/2r, supplied in red (bleached, see above), spaces for initials with guide letters in part 2, title rubricated.
The first dated edition from the press of Johann Petri, and the first of three Petri editions of the highly popular Herbarius, all of which were illustrated with the same skillful reverse copies of the woodcuts of Schoeffer's first edition. Some of the German dialect names differ from those of the first edition.
The binding tools are not identified in Kyriss or Shunke, Schwenke-Sammlung. The curved leaf, pieced heart, and rectangular floral tools are recorded in Weale, Early Stamped Bookbindings in the British Museum (London 1922), no. 352, on a copy of a group of tracts by Sacro Bosco, Venice 1482-85 (BMC V, 286, IA 20516), but the provenance is unknown.

Provenance: "Aggregator de simplicibus" inscribed in a contemporary hand at top of fol. 1/2; contemporary marginalia in Latin and German, in humanistic and gothic cursive hands; pin-pricked inscription in lower margin of fol. 18/3 (figure 131): "Kaetchen d(ie) 27 August 1784"; Juan Carlos Ahumada, bookplate and ink-stamp, with his (?) ink note on front pastedown stating that the book was purchased from Goldschmidt in 1937 for #105 (the latter's catalogue description loosely inserted); the present owner.
