Chancery folio, 271 x 194mm. (10 3/16 x 7 5/8 in.), contemporary blind-stamped calf over bevelled wooden boards, two brass and leather fore-edge clasps, the clasps with cast inscription, rebacked, old restorations to corners and board edges, endpapers renewed; an Augsburg binding (Kyriss shop 77); rubbed, extremities of spine chipped, some worming to covers and margins of first few leaves, first leaf with small hole in woodcut and margins renewed, five leaves with repaired tears affecting a few letters, a few leaves with internal tears not affecting text, marginal repairs or short marginal tears to approximately 28 leaves, fol. o1 (missigned o2) replaced backward (verso/recto) after damage to gutter (its present fore-margin short), gutter of conjugate leaf k2.7 renewed, gutters of last quire reinforced with modern linen, a few leaves discolored, some mostly marginal dampstaining, occasional slight offsetting or showthrough of coloring and of printer's ink (from stacking of the sheets), a few minor stains, a few words on h7v, h8r and D3v inked out by an early reader, slight marginal soiling.

Collation: a-v8 w8 x8 y8 z8 A-D8 E6 F8 G-H6 I8. 258 leaves with signatures. Contents: a1r blank, a1v: full-page woodcut of three savants with two attendants in a pharmacy, apprentice with mortar in the background, jars bearing town arms, no shield, a2r-a3r: Preface, a3v blank, a4r-E6v: Text, F1r-F2v: first index, F2v-F3r: chapter on uroscopy, F3r-I7v: indices, I7v: colophon, I8 blank. Types: 3:140 (headings); 2:96 (text). Double column. 42 lines. Opening full-page woodcut, woodcut on F2v of a woman (on the right) and physician holding urine flask, and 394 woodcuts, mostly of plants, a few of animals, precious metals, etc., THE WOODCUTS COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND, possibly with additional later coloring. Spaces for initials, supplied in red.

Third edition, second Schönsperger edition, illustrated with reduced copies (a few reversed) of the woodcuts of his earlier edition, as well as a few new cuts. VERY RARE. According to ABPC, only one copy has appeared at auction in the past 60 or more years.

Provenance: A few contemporary marginal notes, some later marginal markings (crosses under woodcuts, etc.) or corrections, a few numbers (inverse foliation?) written in lower fore-corners; effaced early ownership inscription on a2r; two inscriptions below colophon giving the book's age: "Ist heute dato dises Bucch zwaÿhundert Jahr alltt. Anno 1636 die 14 May", and "[?] Maÿ anno 1721 ist dieses buch 235 Jahr alt worden"; Juan Carlos Ahumada, bookplate and ink-stamp with inscribed date of 1939, presumably the date of purchase, on front pastedown, with an unidentified catalogue description from a German bookseller, loosely inserted, inscribed "1939 ?" presumably in Ahumada's hand; the present owner.
