Folio, 361 x 230mm. (14 3/16 x 9 1/16in.), nineteenth-century vellum, small gilt flowering plant at center of covers, by Pagnant, extremities rubbed, soiled, inner joints splitting, title-leaf and a2-6 with extensive repairs to fore- and lower margins affecting woodcut title border, marginal repairs to a few other leaves, the first 100 leaves dampstained with some fungal damage at gutters, occasional mostly marginal dampstaining elsewhere, one or two small stains.
Title within allegorical woodcut border composed of several blocks, half-page woodcut portrait of the author on verso of title, very numerous small woodcuts of plants, animals, distilling apparatuses, etc., historiated woodcut initials, woodcut head- and tail-pieces.
Fourth French edition, second edition of Moulins's translation (the first published by Rouillé in 1572). The woodcuts of this and the 1572 edition were copied from both the large and small woodcuts of Valgrisi's Venetian editions, with the addition of insects to many of the plant cuts.
