LONICER, ADAM. Kreüterbuch, Künstliche Conterfeytunge der Bäume, Stauden, Hecken, Kreuter, Getreyde, Gewürtze...weit über vorige Edition gemehret... Frankfurt: heirs of Christian Egenolff 1598.
Folio, 310 x 197mm. (12 1/4 x 7 11/16 in.), contemporary pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, covers blind-tooled to a panel design with acorn and leaf outer roll-border, inner border of a Christ, Paul, Peter and John roll-tool, and innermost roll of a male profile between foliage sprays, framing a different central plaque on each cover (partially obscured by centerpiece bosses), of Judith (upper cover) and Jael (lower cover), brass center- and corner-piece bosses, two brass fore-edge clasps, edges stained green, extremities and spine slightly rubbed, lacks final blank leaf (NN6), title soiled and with short marginal tear, 6-inch tear to CC4 with old Scotch tape repair, 2-inch marginal tear to GG4 entering text, numerous short tears to lower margins, particularly in part 3, small stain to I5 obscuring part of woodcut on recto and about 6 letters on verso, stain to q3 affecting a letter of headline, some spotting and browning.
3 parts in one, mostly gothic type, title printed in red and black with large woodcut vignette (repeated on A1r), title-leaf to part 3 with four woodcuts of animals (part 2 has no separate title-leaf), woodcut half-page author portrait on )(6v, printer's woodcut device on NN5r, APPROXIMATELY 840 TEXT WOODCUTS of plants, animals, fish, precious stones, distilling apparatus and scenes of rural life, THE WOODCUTS COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, some additional later coloring to the first section.
Lonicer's popular Kreuterbuch, first printed in 1557 and frequently reprinted, was a compilation based on previous works, principally Eucharius Rösslin's Kreutterbuch of 1533 (itself a revised combination of the Gart der Gesundheit and Brunschwig's Destillierbuch) and T. Dorsten's Botanicon. The text, which is illustrated with woodcuts copied from the herbals of Brunfels, Fuchs, Bock and others, was repeatedly rearranged through successive reeditions.
