FIRST EDITION, engraved title within architectural border and figures, 42 engraved anatomical plates by Nicolo Beatrici after drawings by Gaspar Becerra who directly copied 38 of Vesalius's plates (one plate, the muscle man holding his own skin, is said to be derived from Michelangelo's painting in the Sistine Chapel), historiated woodcut initials. Some dampstaining at edges, many leaves quite badly stained, lacks 2 blank leaves at end, 2 plates torn. Rare.

FIRST EDITION, woodcut title-border of perspective wreath, numerous woodcut diagrams and illustrations of plan, elevation and perspective studies, historiated initials and geometric headpieces. Title-leaf barely cropped, some dampstaining at end.
Only part of the edition was issued with the perspective title-border, the other part was issued with a conventional title-page. It reproduces Dürer's perspective work. "Barbaro...mentions the camera obscura fitted with a bi-convex lens. [He] introduces a novelty--the use of a diaphragm to sharpen the image. This is the first mention of a device essential in photography"--Gernsheim, History of Photography, p. 22.

Folio, 290 x 203mm. (11 3/8 x 7 7/8in.), Spanish sixteenth-century blindstamped calf over wooden boards [cf. Foot. Davis Gift, I, 20 and p. 265], upper joint split and a small piece of the backstrip lost, lacks clasps, minor restoration, endpapers renewed.
