ANOTHER PROPERTY A FINE COLLECTION OF WORKS BY JOHN GOULD A nearly complete set, collected about one hundred years ago in England, of Gould and Sharpe's uniform folio works. The group comprises 12 works in 45 volumes, wanting only the two cancelled parts of The Birds of Australia, both the first edition (with Supplement) and second edition of Toucans, the first edition of Trogons and the Kangaroos. All large folio, the 45 volumes each measure approximately 550 x 370mm. (21 5/8 x 14 5/8in.). UNIFORMLY BOUND c. 1887-1907 BY ZAEHNSDORF in olive-brown crushed levant morocco, richly gilt, the covers with gilt-tooled floral border surrounding a broad double-fillet gilt panel containing repeated impressions of two different gilt bird

First issue with the backgrounds uncolored, 80 hand-colored lithographed plates by Elizabeth Gould after sketches by Gould, printed by C. Hullmandel.

GOULD'S FIRST BOOK, issued to 298 subscribers (the number later reached 335) in 20 monthly parts, and the prototype in format and method of publication -- both adopted from Edward Lear's Parrots, published from 1830 to 1832 -- for Gould's later works.
