Quarter-plate daguerreotype. Late 1850s-60s. Hand-tinted, gilt highlights, arched-top gilt mount, folding leather case with photographer's gilt credit stamp Baker's Photographic Gallery, Calcutta on front cover, decorative gilt clasp.

Lot Essay

J. Baker was assistant to J.W. Newland in 1855. J. Baker's daguerreotype studio is recorded in Wellesley Place, Calcutta in 1858 and continued by R.W. Baker from 1860-68. It became the Calcutta Photographic Company in 1869, although the firm's negative stock had been purchased by Saché & Westfield.
