Album of 46 albumen prints. Circa 1860s-80s. Varying in size from 7 1/8 x 9 5/8 in. (18.1 x 24.4 cm.) to 10¼ x 11 1/8 in. (26 x 28.2 cm.) or the reverse. 6 titled and/or signed in the negatives, all but one mounted one side only, titled in ink, various annotations in pencil on front free end, green leather, gilt title and border on front cover, g.e.; with 2 printed lists of photographs by Captain Lyon.

Lot Essay

Varied album comprising twenty-eight views of India, six views of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and twelve views of Egypt. The Indian photographs are mainly of temples and palaces in Tanjore (including architectural details), Bellary, Madurai, Tinnerelly and Mysore, along with views of the Nilgiri Hills. The Ceylon views are of Kandy, the railway, the lake and of dagobas (stupas). Other subjects are the Suez canal, a minaret in Cairo, a few portraits of Egyptian water-carriers and a portrait of an Algerian girl.
