Album of 62 albumen prints. 1870s - early 1880s. The majority approximately 8½ x 11 in. (21.6 x 28 cm.) or the reverse. Variously signed in the negatives Skeen & Co. (8), Scowen (2), Zangaki (9), Arnoux (3), GWW (2), titled in ink or pencil on mounts, signed in pencil F. V. Harper and inscribed in a later hand in ink Collection of Ceylon Views including Poonagalla with Frank Vogan Harper & family..., green leather, gilt, gilt ruled, g.e.

Lot Essay

Includes a family group with Harper seated outside a bungalow at Cinnamon Gardens, a breakwater ceremony, Singhalese mat-weavers, a group of Buddhist priests, buffaloes ploughing, fruit-sellers and a Singhalese male portrait. Scenic views include the view from Lady Horton's Walk, the Pavilion at the Governor's House, the view from Katukelly lake in Kandy; the Queen's House, General Post Office, Railway Station, a Hindu temple and the police barracks in Colombo; Kadialena Falls in Kotmain; the Glencairn Estate. The album also includes a few views in Britain and Egypt.
