PREFACE: Aldus tells adolescent students that although they have had mostly Greek books from him, there are many modern writers from whom they can profit, among them the Ferrara professor Maioli. These philosophical treatises are very learned, but he apologizes for the author's refusal to polish his inelegant style. For that reason he had first refused to print the book, but then his friend pleaded that pupils were clamouring for it.

BINDING: gold-tooled black morocco antique, knotwork decoration, gilt edges. PROVENANCE: A few manuscript marginalia (washed out)

FIRST EDITION of Maioli's two works (Averroes' tract had appeared in several earlier editions as part of his commentaries on Aristotle). From the preface it is quite clear that Aldus had been reluctant to publish the book under his imprint and that his editorial assistant on the Greek Aristotle - then under production - had applied heavy pressure.
