This finial was possibly part of an elaborate lamp or incense burner, with the flickering light enhancing the suggestion of movement. Compare a larger example in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, see Asiatic Art in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, 1982, cat. no. 188; and a pair sold at Christie's New York, 23 March, 1999, lot 208.
