PAUSANIAS (fl. ca. 150 A.D.) Graeciae descriptio, Gk. Ed. Marcus Musurus. Super-chancery 2° (312 x 216mm). Collation π. (title with device f4, Latin preface, editor's dedication to Janus Lascaris in Greek); a-r8 s6 (text, colophon, device f4). 144 leaves. Greek type 3bis:90 (text), roman 13:89 (incidental). 56 lines and headline. Initial-spaces with guide-letters. (Wormhole in the first half affecting a few letters, slight soiling at the beginning.)

PROVENANCE: some Greek and Latin side-notes in two early hands; Sir Mark Masterman Sykes (1771-1823), arms, inscribed at Sledmere, 1824 sale; S. Rosen (bookplate detached).
EDITIO PRINCEPS. Pausanias' historical and topographical description of Greece is particularly valuable for his observations on artistic monuments; their accuracy is confirmed by existing remains. Musurus's last edition for the Aldine Press is proof of his methodical and competent scholarship. "It is clear that this is one of the best of the editiones principes" (Wilson p. 155). In the dedicatory letter he praises Lascaris for his ceaseless efforts in the struggle to deliver Greece from Turkish bondage, and for his many literary services to the Greeks of Venice and elsewhere. The publishers' note explains the usefulness to the reader of running chapter titles at the top of each page. Isaac 12860; Adams P-521; Hoffmann III, 48; Murphy 126; Geneva BPU 38; R 76:3
