Second Aldine edition. According to Renouard, Aldus had used his own annotated copy of Janus Lascaris' 1494 editio princeps as exemplar for his first edition of 1503 (see lot 47) and continued his revisions after it was published; rather later, Franc. Asulanus added his notes in the volume, which is described in Renouard's private library catalogue II 129, and re-edited it for the present edition of 1521. However, in the BNF Henri II's copy of the ed. pr. (CIBN A-410, Rés Yb. 484) also contains autograph manuscript marginalia attributed to Asulanus, as well as earlier notes in a hand tentatively identified as that of Arsenios Apostolis, the editor of Theodorus Prodromus's poem Galeomyomachia (printed by Aldus ca. 1495). The editing history of the Aldine Greek Anthology therefore remains to be sorted out. Adams A-1183; Hoffmann I, 168; Murphy 171; R 93:17
