BINDING: contemporary Bolognese deep-brown goatskin, covers decorated in blind with roll-tooled arabesque border surrounding small floral tools, in the centre gilt arms, perhaps of a member of the Montefani family of Bologna, spine blind-tooled (restored, front joint broken), title inscribed in ink on top edges. PROVENANCE: contemporary manuscript marginalia in Latin throughout, showing knowledge of Virgil and humanist writers.
Second Aldine edition, with Erasmus's annotated index added (first published at Basel by Froben in 1518). In this copy Erasmus's name has been obliterated in several places by a censor. Adams S-2035; Murphy 176; R 91:7
