Lot Essay

Talbot first photographed Nicholas Henneman posed chopping wood in 1841. In this more ambitious version of a similar subject he poses Henneman again apparently sawing wood, with another figure, thought to be Talbot's servant and second photographic assistant, Charles Porter. The corresponding negative is in the collection of the Royal Photographic Society, Bath.
