Album of seventy-three albumen prints, the majority approx. 9½ x 11½ in., (three photographs only loosely inserted), thirty-seven signed and numbered from Bourne's series, ten signed and numbered Shepherd & Robertson, two small portrait groups signed indistinctly in ink on recto P.[?B].Innes, ten Italian views titled and numbered in the negatives, full brown morocco, initialled H.M.R. in gilt on front cover, g.e., 4to.

Lot Essay

A good mixed northern India album with thirty-seven large architectural or landscape views in and around Calcutta, Delhi, Simla, 'Nynee Tal', Gwalior, Darjeeling, the Deig Fort, Benares and Agra, one view of the 'Sumeree Temple at Ramnuggur' including a stereoscopic camera on tripod. Also containing fifteen large portrait or genre groups: Afridi warriors photographed by Shepherd; 'Bhooteas' and 'Nepaulese' by Bourne; an early unsigned study by Bourne or Bourne & Shepherd numbered 110, 'Hill coolies with Khiltas and dandy, Simla'; Shepherd & Robertson studies of 'Nawabs' (1112), 'Jat Sirdars (Bhurtpore)' (1118), another similar unnumbered, possibly no. 1116 'Jat Zemindars', 'Guddees' (1113), 'Banya's shop' (1121), 'An Indian carriage and pair' (1128) and 'Brahmins' (1117). Other unsigned images include a study of the officers and men of the 11th Bengal Lancers, a Tibetan man and a group of servants from a European household.

Three of the Shepherd and Robertson studies (nos. 1117, 1121 and 1128) were also used in the The People of India by Forbes Watson and Kaye, published between 1868 and 1875.

Major P. B. Innes was a member of the Amateur Photographic Association.
