Chinese portrait and genre album, late 1860s

Album of forty-nine (of fifty) hand-coloured albumen prints, the majority around 8 x 10½ in., twenty-four trimmed oval, one other vignetted, each with printed title label on mount, these numbered consecutively 1 - 50 (with the label only for no. 29 - 'A funeral procession'), no. 42 - 'Priests' only loosely inserted, front free end paper inscribed J. R. Griffith........, half morocco, (lacking spine, rubbed and stained), ruled gilt, g.e., large 4to.

Lot Essay

A rare album including all but one of the photographs from Saunders' published series. D. K. Griffith was an assistant of Saunders from 1872-75. The original owner of the album may have been a member of his family.
