Designed in the antique/Egyptian manner popularised by C. Percier and P.F.L. Fontaine's Receuil de Décorations Interieures, 1801, this plinth-supported couch-bed with sphinx-paw feet and Grecian-scrolled ends guarded by sphinx with arabesque-scrolled tails, relates to a pattern published in Sammlung von Zeichnungen der neuesten Londoner und Pariser Meubles als Muster für Tischler, Leipzig, 1804
