Lot Essay

The Drapers' Hall was a major client of Morris & Co. in the 1930s. Their commissions included extensive stair carpeting and a landing carpet in the 'Montreal' pattern in early 1934, and later in the year, the present carpet for the Court Room. Documentation survives in the Drapers' Hall archives which records the process of selection involving the Master and Wardens, and their negotiations with H.C.Marillier at Morris and Co., Hanover Square.
In March 1934, the Clerk requested designs and patterns from Morris & Co. which were supplied on the 16th April. Marillier writes on that date I send you herewith two samples and three sketches of "oriental" hand tufted carpets to add to the Morris designs which you already have. Any of these can be woven in the same quality of your stair carpet, and the colouring can be varied to suit the room. Marillier chases this order on May 25th..."When may I expect to know about the Board Room (sic) carpet? It will take some months to weave, and I shall have to get a proper sketch and colour trial first.."..with the satisfactory result that a design was chosen by the Court of Wardens on 31st May, and a request for a specimen sample of weaving and colour was made to Marillier the following day. The carpet was finally approved on 24th July.."subject to the outer border being dark blue instead of light green..". The finally cost of the carpet was approximately ¨400.
