Voysey was an prolific designer of wallpapers, textiles and other decorative media for domestic use, and carpets were no exception. His main aim was to introduce lightness and colour into what he perceived as morbid and dreary interiors. His influence for his naturalistic flowing designs owes more to Mackmurdo, founder of the Century Guild, than to William Morris, at times coming close to a true continental 'Art Nouveau' style.
The present Donnemara pattern proved extremely popular, and was manufactured in Alexander Morton's Donegal range in a variety of sizes, colour ways and permutations of design, both with and without borders
