Lot Essay

Godwin's design for the 'Jacobean' chair appeared in William Watt's Art Furniture catalogue of 1877. It was a form which was much copied by other manufacturers, leading to the patent of as number of Godwin's designs for Watt. The present chairs appear to show some differences of proportion and detail when compared with the sketch in Watt's catalogue
