THESE LITTLE COMMERCIAL VEHICLES WERE BUILT BY JOHN WARRICK AND CO. LTD, READING - THIS IS VEHICLE NUMBER 641. ABOUT 2,000 WARRICKS WERE TURNED OUT BETWEEN 1911 AND 1925. WHILE CONCERNED ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY WITH GOODS VEHICLES A FEW CHASSIS WERE EXPORTED TO NEW ZEALAND AND ACQUIRED PASSENGER BODIES ALONG WITH ONE OR TWO "SPECIAL COACHWORKS" SUCH AS FOUR VEHICLES WHICH ENTERED THE SERVICE OF SCOTLAND YARD! GENERALLY THEY WERE USED BY TRADESMEN FOR SMALL DELIVERIES, THIS PARTICULAR ONE WAS BUILT AS A MILK FLOAT FOR HOUSE DELIVERIES. IT IS STILL KITTED OUT WITH ALL ITS EQUIPMENT - CHURN, HANDSET, MEASURING LADLES ETC.

THE WARRICK ACQUIRED AN ENVIABLE REPUTATION AND AS THE AUTOMOBILE ENGINEER COMMENTED "A VEHICLE THAT CAN CLIMB A 1-IN-5 GRADIENT ON FIVE BRAKEHORSEPOWER, CAN SURVIVE 20 YEARS OF STOP-GO DELIVERY WORK IN THE WEST END OF LONDON, AND COULD GIVE SATISFACTION UNDER THE ROAD CONDITIONS OF EDWARDIAN NEW ZEALAND MUST HAVE SOMETHING." THE FRAME FOLLOWS EARLY TRICAR PRINCIPLES, CONSISTING OF TWO ENORMOUS PARALLEL U-SECTION SIDE MEMBERS SUPPORTING THE FORECARRIAGE AND END IN A VERY NARROW "U" IN WHICH THE PRIMARY DRIVE AND ENGINE ARE SITUATED. THE ENGINE OF WARRICK DESIGN IS MOUNTED BELOW THE DRIVERS SEAT AND HAS TWIN EXTERNAL FLYWHEELS OF GREAT WEIGHT NOT ONLY TO ASSIST SLOW RUNNING, BUT TO DRIVE PROPELLER STYLE COOLING FANS. IGNITION IS BY A LARGE CHAIN DRIVE BOSCH MAGNETO AND THE FUEL IS GRAVITY FED TO A BROWN AND BARLOW CARBURETTOR FROM A TANK ON THE DASH.

TO MASTER THE DRIVING INTRICACIES WOULD TAKE TOO LONG TO DESCRIBE HOWEVER ACCOMPANYING THE VEHICLE IS A VERY INFORMATIVE ARTICLE WRITTEN BY THE LATE MICHAEL SEDGWICK FOR THE FEBRUARY 1967 EDITION OF VETERAN & VINTAGE MAGAZINE IN WHICH THIS ACTUAL TRI-CAR IS FEATURED AND APPEARED ON THE FRONT COVER. ACCORDING TO THE OLD STYLE LOG BOOKS WHICH DATE BACK TO 1921 THERE HAVE ONLY BEEN TWO REGISTERED KEEPERS PRIOR TO THE CURRENT OWNERS PURCHASING THE VEHICLE AT AUCTION IN 1969. IT WAS USED IN RECENT YEARS FOR A CATHERINE COOKSON FILM AND WAS RUN LAST YEAR BUT SAID TO BE DOWN ON COMPRESSION. CERTAINLY AN INTRIGUING VEHICLE DATED BY THE VETERAN CAR CLUB AS 1914, CERTIFICATE NUMBER 1171, WHICH IS GUARANTEED TO DRAW AN INTRIGUED CROWD WHEREVER IT IS SHOWN. IT WOULD BE SUITABLE FOR MANY VETERAN CAR CLUB EVENTS AND A FUN COMPETITION WITH YOUR FRIENDS WOULD BE TO SEE WHO CAN MASTER THE VEHICLE TO DRIVE IT SMOOTHLY WITHOUT SPILLING THE MILK!
