Lot Essay

The only equivalent figure of a predatory carnivore appears to be the unique wolf, of the Kangxi period, previously in the Collection of Jakob Goldschmidt, offered in these Rooms, 29-30 June 1938, lot 83; that example had been previously exhibited at the Chinese Art Exhibition, Berlin 1929, no.948. It differs from the present lot in the form of a tail, and as far as one can judge from the catalogue photograph, in the alertness of the lurking animal; the Kangxi version is more upright and less menacing
