The Brent Geese in this painting belong to the 'Dark-bellied' race, which would have been familiar to Harrison on the Norfolk coast. These birds spend the winter around the shores of the North Sea and migrate to arctic Siberia to breed in the summer. There is also a 'Light-bellied' race which winters mainly in Ireland, North-east England and Denmark and breeds in Greenland and Svalbard
