G.E. Crawhall was one of the foremost Field naturalists in the north of England and a skilled taxidermist. He worked with the wealthy industrialist Frederick Raine collecting and recording suitable bird specimens which were then donated to the Hancock Museum in Newcastle. Crawhall was Vice President of the Natural History Society in Northumberland (1895-1909) and curator of Zoology (1895-1902). G.E. Crawhall was highly influential in encouraging his young nephew Joseph Crawhall Junior (1861-1913) to paint
